DIGITAL MESSAGE STICK

Digital storytelling is a new method of capturing lives, experiences and creating community. It is more than just adding images to text. Digital stories are like short movies with voice-overs, audio, captions and special effects.

SWPLC believes that DST methodology has a place within ACE as a means of creating personal and community stories and adding multimeada content to learning.

The workshop was devised to introduce teachers and managers to the concepts, tools and possiblities of digital storytelling in a community setting allowing participants to create their own stories, without having to purchase expensive software.

Using MovieMaker 2, which comes as part of Windows XP, and a recording program called GoldWave, which is available as a free download from the Internet, participants are able to take their finished products back to their learning centres to pass on the skills to others in their community. We will be running more of these session during 2005. These workshops look at:

  • how to craft engaging stories
  • the writing and design skills necessary for creating effective digital stories
  • the tools of digital storytelling - photo editing, and movie editing programs
  • the learning and teaching context in which digital stories could be utilised.
